idioma/the curate's egg BrEBrEused in order to say that something has some good parts and some bad parts:Unfortunately many parts of the book were disappointing, though like the curate's egg, parts of it were brilliant. The market for ELT books in Latin America has been described as a curate's egg.Note This idiom comes from a joke in the magazine, Punch, in which a curate (=a priest of the lowest rank) is eating breakfast with the Bishop (=a priest of the highest rank) at the Bishop's house. When the Bishop asks him if he has a bad egg, he says, "Oh no, my Lord, I assure you! Parts of it are excellent!" (Vol 109; November 1895)
