1. To fight in honor of someone or something. Many of the men who left to fight for their country did not live to return to it.
2. To struggle to gain or secure someone or something. If you're in love with Vanessa, then you need to fight for your girl. Many civil rights pioneers fought for the end of segregation.
fight for someone or something
to go to battle for the benefit of someone or something; to go to battle in the name of someone or something. They all went off to fight for their country. The soldiers fought for the queen and the survival of the empire. I guess I will have to learn to fight for my rights.
