释义

(do something) like it's going out of style

To do something very frequently, quickly, or in great amounts. My husband took a baking course last week, and now he's making cupcakes like it's going out of style! After getting his bonus, Jim started spending money like it was going out of style.

like it was going out of style

Fig. rapidly or frequently. I'm worried about Sally. She's taking aspirin like it's going out of style. The kids have been eating sweet corn like it was going out of style.

do something like it's going out of style

or

do something as though it's going out of style

If you do something like it's going out of style or as though it's going out of style, you do it a lot and with great energy. My grandkids eat this dish like it's going out of style. These footballers have been spending money as though it was going out of style.

like it was going out of style

Describing something being done with extreme urgency, as though it was the last chance to do it. This ungrammatical expression and the synonymous like there’s no tomorrow date only from about 1970 but are well on their way to becoming clichés. They are used in such contexts as “He’s spending his trust fund like it was going out of style” or “They attacked the buffet table like there’s no tomorrow.” Purists frown on the conjunctive use of like (instead of as) but the clichés persist.
