In this usage, the term is often hyphenated and is typically used in the phrases "stay-at-home mom" and "stay-at-home dad." I never thought I would miss working in an office, but being a stay-at-home mom is utterly exhausting. Once my niece was born, my brother became a stay-at-home dad.

2. adjective A phrase used to describe one who prefers to spend time at home, as opposed to going out and/or engaging in social activities. I've never been one to party or travel—I'm just a stay at home girl.

3. noun One who tends to stay home, as opposed to going out. Why do I have to be the stay at home all the time? I like to travel, too, you know!
