1. To become wild, irrational, senseless, or insane. She went out of her mind at the sight of her child lying lifeless on the cot. All this noise in the house, day in, day out—I feel like I'm going out of my mind!
2. To become extremely excited or enthusiastic (about something). I've never understood that pop star's popularity, but kids just go out of their minds for her music.

go out of one's mind

Lose one's mental stability, become insane, as in After he heard that the ore he had mined was worthless, the prospector went out of his mind . This phrase is often used as a humorous exaggeration, as in I'm going out of my mind reading these proofs. The phrase out of one's mind dates from the late 1300s, and was used with go shortly thereafter. Also see lose one's mind.
