庙宇创建于明末，当时大陆沿岸王船漂流至此，先民于是在此搭寮奉祀，庙名为「保宁宫」，为麻豆代天府前身。建筑外观相当宏伟的代天府，泉州式建筑的屋脊，有着光彩夺目的琉璃瓦。大门上樟木雕刻的立体门神，是用整块一尺厚樟木雕刻而成，雄伟威严，是其它庙宇所罕见的. 有一尊高达五层楼，长约200余公尺的五彩巨龙，是世界较大的建筑。
