词汇 a Catch 22 (situation)
释义
idioma Catch 22 (situation)used about a situation in which any choice you make or action you choose leads to failure or trouble:It's a bit of a Catch 22 - she can't get a job in town without a car, but she'll never be able to afford one on the wages she's getting here. We're in a Catch 22 situation; if we ask politely for what we want, they'll ignore us, but if we make a fuss, they'll call us troublemakers, and say that we shouldn't be encouraged.
Note This idiom comes from the title of a book about World War II by Joseph Heller. The main character is very frightened of being killed, and wishes he could persuade military officials that is his crazy so that he would not have to fly in raids (=attacks) against the enemy. However, the officials know that anyone who is so frightened cannot be crazy, and therefore he is forced to fly again and again. This is the Catch 22 situation.
