An island of the SE R.S.F.S.R., comprising the Sakhalin Oblast, Russian Sakhalinskaya Oglast; center, Yuzhno-Sakha-linsk. The southern part of the island, known as Karafuto, was ceded to Japan by the Treaty of Portsmouth, but was reocuppied after World War II. Formerly Saghalien.
