NoteThis idiom is from a line in Shakespeare's play,Hamlet.You may hear people use 'the rub' in other expressions that show what is difficult or unpleasant about the situation: Pepsi-cola was willing to donate $15,000 for the parks. The rub was that the playgrounds must be called "Pepsi" parks and they must erect a sign to that effect.
