phrasesponge off/on sponge off/on sb to get money or other things from other people without paying them back or doing anything for them in return - used to show disapproval: Seb's parents were very rich, and he just sponged off them. He never had to do a day's work in his life. They're just sponging off the backs of ordinary taxpayers! I don't see why I should give them any of my money.
