sandbag

1. slang To force or coerce someone to do something. The boss is always sandbagging the interns into doing the most menial tasks around the office.
2. slang To downplay how a company or individual will perform or deliver in order to surpass the expectations of others. The global corporation gave a fairly conservative projection of its earnings for the year, but many suspect it is just sandbagging with a number it knows it can beat.
3. slang To downplay one's ability or act as though one is much less skilled in some task or activity in order to deceive and take advantage of someone. All of a sudden, he started making every single shot on the pool table. I think he might have been sandbagging us in the first game. I've seen that guy before. He sandbags in the early part of the game, then cleans up when everyone tries to bluff him.
4. slang In poker, to give the impression that one has a weaker hand than one's opponent in order to trap them. Why would you check now? Are you sandbagging me?

self-propelled sandbag

slang A somewhat derogatory term United States Marine, possibly alluding to a sandbag's ability to catch and stop bullets. Popularized during the Gulf War from 1990–1991. Primarily heard in US. I heard Congress is sending even more self-propelled sandbags to Kuwait.

2. tv. to deceive someone; to fool someone about one’s capabilities. Don’t let them sandbag you into expecting too little.

n. a U.S. Marine. (Persian Gulf War.) Those guys are just self-propelled sandbags. They are fearless.
