max

A shortening of "maximum." Often used in the phrase "the max." I need five more minutes—10 max. They really pushed the PG-13 rating to the max in that movie.

max out

1. To reach or cause to reach a limit or threshold after which no further achievement, potential, progress, etc. is possible. I made the terrible mistake of maxing out my credit cards to get the business up and running. I'm good at crossword puzzles but that one is where I max out.
2. slang To relax; to chill. I'm not busy, just maxing out. Want to come over and chill?

to the max

To the highest level or degree; as much as possible. We're pushing the computer to the max to be able to render these kinds of effects. The film is cheesy to the max, but intentionally so.

grody to the max

As disgusting or repulsive as is possible. "Grody" might come from the word "grotesque." Ugh, that smell is grody to the max—I'm practically gagging.

maxin'

Relaxing to the greatest extent possible; not doing anything at all. A humorous, colloquial combination of "max(imum)" and "relaxin(g)." Ever since I got the payout from my lottery winnings, I've just been maxin' on the beach in Florida without a care in the world. A: "What you up to tonight?" B: "Nothin', just maxin'. Any plans?"

max out

to reach one's maximum in something, such as weight in weight lifting or credit on a credit card. Andy finally maxed out at 300 pounds. Randy just knew when he had maxed out. Something in his body told him to stop.
