joual
noun the working-class dialect of Frenglish, a mixture of languages, used in Quebec. This term, used by English Quebec speakers rather than 'Frenglish', may derive from a corruption of
cheval French for 'horse', i.e. 'French spoken on horseback'. Famed and favourite playwright Michel Tremblay wrote all his early plays in 'joual' and refused to allow them to be translated until the separatist party won power in 1976
