safe havenA sanctuary. This term is redundant, since haven means “a safe place.” It is quite old, the earliest citation in the OED being from 1581. Haven also was for a time used as a verb, meaning “to shelter,” as in Robert Southey’s poem of 1795, “Safe haven’d from the sea.” The Times of London (Aug. 15, 1865) had the current usage: “One safe haven where no nicotine perfume intrudes . . .” |
