It become clear from very early on that the director is using this adaptation as a peg on which to hang his own political agenda. The musical's plot is laughably thin, but most audiences will be willing to look past that given that the show is mostly a peg on which to hang catchy, upbeat song-and-dance numbers.

He rarely discusses the book, using it as a peg on which to hang his opinions — and not necessarily those related to the book. Note: This expression can be used to show that the ideas or opinions are not directly relevant to the main subject being discussed.
